About

Mystery Service Saturdays/Sundays (MSS) are a new initiative from Service & Community Engagement in the Office of Student Organizations and Activities, and we're so excited to introduce them to you! These events will consist of two main parts & transportation is provided: 
  • Education, Direct Service and Reflection with an organization in the Lexington, KY area 
  • A social component that, for this MSS occurrence, will include FOOD! 
Our goal for these events is to introduce UK students to a new, surprise community partner, and to engage in education/reflection and direct service around a particular social or environmental issue. If you do decide to sign up for the event (instructions on how to do so below), you will be notified THREE DAYS PRIOR to the event what the service and social aspects will be. However, you will not know the name of the organization or what the site of the social event is until the day of service.

While we want to keep these events as ~mysterious~ as possible, we also know that the "mystery" location component has the potential to create a barrier for some folks when looking to sign up. That said, if you sign up for the event and would like to know more sooner than 3 days in advance, please reach out to us at volunteerUK@uky.edu and we're happy to share the details of the event location.
If you do sign up for the event, please know that you are able to change your mind at ANY time. You are under no obligation to join us at any stage, we just ask that if you are going to opt out that you let us know as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours in advance of the event so that we can fill your spot and fulfill our promise to our community partners.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THE OCTOBER EDITION OF MYSTERY SERVICE SATURDAYS: 
  • You are REQUIRED to wear your mask for the duration of the event unless eating/drinking
  • In an effort to keep everyone as safe and physically distanced as possible, the service and social components of this event will take place OUTDOORS
  • Unfortunately, this service location is not ADA accessible. If you would like to participate, but will need any specific accommodations, please reach out to us - we may be able to make adjustments! 
  • We will travel to this location via a UK Transportation bus. On the bus, we will sit physically distant from one another and masks will be required on the bus at all times. 
  • The service component of this event will require MANUAL LABOR, and for some (not all), the operation of small power tools, so please be advised when signing up. If you have any questions about this, please contact us! 
  • Long pants are strongly suggested and closed-toed shoes are REQUIRED for this site. We would also suggest that you wear long sleeves if you are able. We will provide sturdy, work gloves for the event. 
  • Optional/Recommended items include: sunscreen, bug spray, a reusable water bottle and/or a hat if you would like to wear one 
  •  EAT BREAKFAST before attending the event. We will be providing lunch, but you will need to eat breakfast on your own. 
  • Because we will be providing lunch, we will ask you to provide any dietary restrictions when you sign up! 
  • The social aspect of this event will include walking a considerable distance and navigating moderate, outdoor terrain. 
HOW TO REGISTER: You will register via this event's page (a green button to the right of the screen). Once you've signed up, you will be able to manage/change your registration (if necessary), via your profile here on GivePulse.

LOOKING FORWARD: 
  • Again, after signing up, you will receive an email THREE DAYS PRIOR to the event with all of the information that you will need. That will include meeting location, time, how far the drive is (again, we will take a bus), what to bring, the nature of the service work, etc. etc. 
  • And, again, if at any point you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as you can!

Requirement Details
Wondering if you should register to volunteer? Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions:
  1. Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.

  2. Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, we ask you not to register. We are doing all we can to align with best practices and keep our community healthy.
